Robert Klein resided in northern Vermont of many years, and during that time he captured in paint the individuality of small towns throughout the Northeast Kingdom. He was particularly fascinated by the quirkiness of the architectural oddities in the region, and his work was unique in showing the very real side of rural scenery not usually portrayed in the pastoral oils of most Vermont landscape artists. From video stores to deserted one room schoolhouses, to run down homes with rusting cars in the yard, Klein found beauty in mundane things. He always created a sense of surprise with his extraordinary palette and fascinating portrayal of light and shadow. In his last years, while residing in New York City, Klein captured the street life of the city in his unique style.
